New Exhibit Opening- Museum of Early Trades and Crafts

Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, 9 Main Street in Madison

A new exhibit, Lenape: Tools & Daily Living, is now open at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison.  Visitors to the museum will learn about some of New Jersey's native people as they lived, worked and played.

Lenape, meaning "ordinary folk," lived in the area encompassing all of present-day New Jersey, parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Connecticut for over 1,000 years before Europeans came to the area in 1524.

Artifacts on display in the exhibit include: small and large ceramic vessels; bowls and baskets for storage and decoration; a dugout canoe used for fishing and transportation; tools used for working with wood, hunting and gardening; historic and contemporary Lenape clothing and ceremonial objects.

The mission of the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts is "to enhance the understanding and appreciation of America's past by presenting and interpreting the history, culture and lives of ordinary people through educational programs, through preservation and stewardship of our collection, and through exhibition and demonstration of the trades and crafts practiced in New Jersey from its earliest settlement."

Founded in the 1960s, the museum was the former site of the Madison Public Library.  The building is a prime example of  "Romanesque Revival," a style popular in the late 19th century, inspired by 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture.

The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts is located at 9 Main Street in Madison, just two blocks west of the train station.  Regular admission is charged for the new exhibit: $5 for adults and $3 for students, seniors and children.

Lenape: Tools & Daily Living is open from February 2010 until January 2011.
