All you need is love. Or is it? When you are young, just the thought of being with the one you love is thrilling enough.
But couples who have been married for years, have little ones running around the house, or spend their time with grandchildren, know that a good relationship takes time, patience and spontaneous fun.
This Valentine's Day, I chatted with three Chatham couples about their plans for the day and how they keep their love alive.
The Thompsons: "We have been married for six years. This Valentine's Day we decided to keep it local and support Chatham restaurants by going to Gregorio's. It's the best of both worlds with great food and only a 10 minute walk! To keep the romance alive in our relationship we laugh, listen, and love."

The Barrons: "We have not had a Valentine's Day out since our daughter was born two years ago! And our son was just born this fall, so we have been very busy! Today we are leaving the kids with our parents and are going to see the film Valentine's Day. It is important to make sure that we have alone time. We spend time together each night when the kids go to bed. And because our parents are nearby and love to take care of the kids, we are still able to go out and spend time with each other and with friends."

The Gardners: "We have been married for 42 years. We are spontaneous year-round and do not just celebrate our love on Valentine's Day. If we see a gift we like for the other person, we give it! It's Valentine's day all the time! Today we are going to our daughter's house and will play 'super grandparents.' We baked heart-shaped meringues and will be cooking dinner for the grandkids. For us it's not hearts and flowers, it's love. Oh, and there are fantastic buys on chocolate the week after Valentine's Day!"
